We Need Oatmeal

Well, we don’t actually need the oatmeal.  We need the Oatmeal containers.

oats2

We are looking at making a fun basketball game with the kids on our Spring Break Fun Day April 2nd.  We need these wide mouthed type containers and if you could donate them to us we would surely appreciate it.

They don’t have to be Quaker Oatmeal, they just need to be about that size and CARDBOARD.  That they are cardboard is key.

Alicia mentioned that she thinks fancy ice cream also comes in about that size container and Denise was momentarily sad she hadn’t thought of that first but still, ICE CREAM so that should be making it on everyone’s grocery list this week.  Seriously.  If you are eating that much oatmeal, ice cream is fully allowed.

If you could bring in your CLEAN containers to the library we we would so super appreciate it.  Thanks for helping make Spring Break Fun Day a success!

March Book Madness

DSCN2651

It may not look like much right now, but it will soon!  Welcome to March Book Madness!  Every week you will have a chance to vote on your favorite book and see how it progresses through the brackets.  It gets you thinking about the books you haven’t read and makes you nostalgic for the books you have read!

Our center display is set up with all the books (that are in, these are popular books here at the library and hard to keep on the shelf) so you can easily check them out and enjoy them.

The books paired against each other are totally random and have no rhyme nor reason.  But in the end, the favorite books begin to emerge.

Last years end board looked like this:

These books are from your children and young adult section.  It doesn’t mean that adults can’t get lost in these great stories as well!

Stop in and vote for your favorite book every week and check out maybe a new favorite!

In the News

We are on the front page of the Penasee Globe this week.

You can’t miss us, we are right next to the men in the coconut bras.  It’s kind of an attention grabber, those coconut bras.

It’s a nice write up!  Check it out HERE.

A Wife’s Lot

We are getting ready for our OPEN HOUSE on Saturday from 9-1 to celebrate the completion of the Front Community Room.
After the crash in April, we put away all our old precious things that were out in the front room.  In looking to put things back in the front Community Room, we have been finding all kinds of treasures.  Alicia and Denise have a hard time getting rid of anything of history and have been having fun looking over old photos and so forth.
Yesterday, while going through old books that we do have to say goodbye to, Alicia found an old yellowed newspaper clipping with this poem on it:
A Wife’s Lot
It must very tedious
To live with one like me,
And have to guess from day to day
Just what I’d like for tea,
And know whene’er I start a tale
Just what it’s going to be.

It must be very tedious
At best to be a wife
And every Tuesday darn his socks
Unto the end of life,
And every Sunday hear him shout:
“Who’s used the carving knife?”

I’d say a woman’s lot is hard
To have to think and plan
To sew and stitch and bake and sweep,
To scour each pot and pan,
And every wakeful minute be
Considerate of a man.

And oh, if were the tables turned,
And I the wife, and she
The husband coming scowling home,
As oft’s the case with me,
I wonder with his every whim
Could I so patient be?

I fancy I should fly at him,
Or quit his lodging hall,
Or bounce the teapot off his head,
Or else my vows recall,
But she who is a wife to me
With patience bears it all.

Festival of Trees

This is the third year we have the fun of having the Festival of Trees here at the library. This is a fund raiser for the Friends of the Library and it may be as anticipated as much as the book/bake sale. Various businesses and individuals make up trees to display at the library. Next to every tree is a canister where you can drop in some quarters (or any money amount) to vote for your favorite tree. At the end of the Festival of Trees (after Christmas) the Friends of the Library count up how much each tree earned and the winners are then given gift cards of some kind.

It is a great way to showcase your business. The creativity of each tree is always such a fun thing to see. Be sure to stop in and look over the amazing detail of each tree and don’t forget to vote for your favorite tree!

You can see all the trees and who they belong to in this facebook album. Here is a sampling of the the trees we have here today in no particular order.

Meg

Good-hearted ‘Meg” leads her sisters in the solemn ritual of reading from Marmee’s gift book, with it’s wise teachings. “Meg at Christmas” wears a taffeta skirt in holiday plaid, topped with a velvet jacket in a shade of the green that matches the cover of her book. Her gift for Mother is a pair of gloves that prove to be a perfect fit.

Jo at Christmas

Eager “Jo” is the first to wake on Christmas morning – and the first to discover Marmee’s gift under her pillow. “Jo at Christmas” wears a festive gown of crimson taffeta, which matches the color for the books she’s received from her mother. She holds a new pair of army slippers – worn just to work out the stiffness – that are her gift to Marmee.

Marmee

Marmee has her own cushioned seat to rest on while she receives her gifts from all her girls at Christmas.

Beth at Christmas

Sweet “Beth” receives a dove colored book – so very suitable for the family’s little dove – but for this holiday she dresses in a deep forest green and weaves flowers into her hair. “Beth at Christmas” holds the handkerchiefs – monogrammed by hand with the word “mother” – that are her gift for her beloved Marmee.

Amy at Christmas
The holidays bring out the best in “Amy at Christmas.” The sometimes vain and selfish daughter, inspired by the generosity of her sister, rushes out to buy Marmee a fine, big bottle of cologne. “Amy” wears a lovely holiday dress of deep blue – her favorite color, and the color of the cover of her gift book from Marmee.
