Fox Forgets

Toddler Time today was a fun book book Suzanne Bloom called Fox Forgets.
Fox Forgets

To make our craft, we printed off this sheet from the internet that was in another language but we decided we could figure it out. 🙂

Our toddler times start out with some coloring pages and then all the kids and parents come sit on the open carpet spot to sing some songs.  Head and shoulders, knees and toes is a favorite right now (how fast can we go?) and we learned a new song about baby ducks from Victoria.  But the favorite song of the day was Jingle Bells.

After singing, the kids settle in to hear Miss Alicia read them a story.  Today was Fox Forgets by Suzanne Bloom.

After reading the story, the toddlers and moms/grandmas head over to the table to make a craft.

We keep all the small parts of the crafts in envelopes.  It makes passing out the cut out parts of the craft so much easier!

When the kids are done with craft making, we have snack!  Because after all the coloring, singing, reading, and crafting, kids are starving!

We try to get pictures with finished crafts.  Sometimes those photos turn out, sometimes they don’t.  And sometimes we get so busy that we don’t catch everyone!

When snack seems to be wrapping up, we pull out the toys.  The train track is always a huge hit!  While the kids play, the parents or care givers chat and look for books to check out.

We start Toddler Time at 10:30 am on Tuesdays.  When we say we start at 10:30, we mean the coloring pages will be out at 10:30.  Getting toddlers and babies to Toddler Time is HARD WORK and we totally understand because we are moms and we remember well those days.  We usually gather on the carpet at 10:45.  Tuesdays are Miss Alicia’s favorite day, she loves to have all the toddlers come in and sing and sit with her while she reads a story!  Miss Denise, who is completely uncrafty, sets out the crafts and runs the front desk during our toddler times.

Toddler time seems to wrap up around noon when it’s time for lunch and naps.

Come out and see us on Tuesdays!

Teen Council Wants to Build a Snowman

Teen Council Wants to Build a Snowman

The Teen Council gathered together in December for a fun afternoon of Christmas activities.

First the teens devoured food of summer sausage with cheese and crackers, brownies and a various sodas.

Then the teens split up in two groups to make snowmen out of toilet paper.

Yes, you read that right. Snowmen out of TOILET PAPER.

And how would they do this? By finding someone who will let you decorate them with toilet paper, of course.

The teens were in two separate sides of the library. It didn’t stop them from sending “spies” to see what the other group was doing.

The judging was going to be tough, we could tell that early on.

In the end, we had Miss Nan decided. There was just really no way that Miss Alicia and Miss Denise wanted to get in the middle of this.

The winner was chosen.

But the second place group only lost by a smidgen. (Thanks to their special snowman who stepped up when none of the teens were keen on volunteering.)

After the snowmen fun (couldn’t you just wait a few minutes to get pictures of the snowmen together? I mean, come on, gang! Let’s think in terms of “bloggable material” here.), the teens started a rowdy game of Christmas Carol Pictionary.

For a lot of them, this was their first time playing Pictionary and it was a lot of fun and a lot of laughs.

Santa!

It was such a wonderful treat to have Santa Clause come to visit us at the library again this year.  He seems to have a very special place in his heart for all the Martin children – young and old.

Martin, Texas

Martin, Texas

Did you know there is a Martin, Texas?

There is.  We even checked out their library online….

bannerYPLWhich got us to wondering on this cold, snowy November day……

Do you think they will notice if this entire town of Martin, Michigan just transplanted ourselves to their Martin, Texas town?

At this early point in our winter, I’m willing to risk it.  Who’s with us? 🙂

Pumpkins with Toddlers

Pumpkins with Toddlers

Today for Toddler Time we read Otis and the Scarecrow and made paper pumpkins to put on our wall.
Otis and the Scarecrow

It’s always fun to see how many photos it takes to get one with sort-of all the toddlers looking at us and smiling while holding up their photos.

I think our wall is going to look cute when we get all our pumpkins done from our toddlers and other children visiting the library.

Toddler Time FallWinter 2014 013

If your toddler or child wants to add a pumpkin to our wall, just let us know and we will get you all the pieces to get to work on it!

We have Toddler Time every Tuesday morning at 10:30 am.  Parents and kids arrive and color pictures until everyone has arrived.  Then Miss Alicia takes song requests (Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes – Old McDonald Had a Farm – If You’re Happy And You Know It -> these seem to be the most requested at the moment) for all the kids to sing together.  This is followed by a story.  Then crafts and the ever favorite snack time!  Miss Alicia then gets out all the toys for the kids to play with while parents spend time visiting.

It’s a great time and we’d love to have you join us!

You can find more information on our website (when it is working) as well.

Teen Council and Cribbage Boards

On Monday, February 18th, the Teen Council braved the intense snow to gather at the library and learn the new (to them) game of Cribbage.  Alice Kelsey’s father, Robert, made the boards for the teens to use and Alice printed out directions.

Of all the teens gathered, only one knew how to play the game.

But if you bribe the teens with brownies, cookies, chips and various 2 liters of soda pop, they are pretty agreeable to learn a new game.

Not going to lie, some of them gave up on the game.  But those who caught on stayed late to keep playing.  The game is extremely fun and highly addictive.

If you need a reminder on how to play the game, here is a quick YouTube video to help you along.

It’s a good thing the teens learned this game, the very next day they all had a snow day!
