Spring Break Fun Day!

Spring Break Fun Day was April 2nd at the library.  Children arrived in sunshine and left in a snow squall.  I guess that’s Spring in Michigan for you.

No child left with a carpet burned nose so we considered the day a great success.

Summer Reading Program this year has the theme of Ready, Set, READ!  The State decides the themes every year and individual libraries are given ideas of what to do then for their summer program but every library is free to do as they choose.

We are still in the process of putting together our SRP (it is a LOT of work) but we feel that it is coming together rather well and the kids will be all ready to read their books in our very sports themed SRP this year.  It helps a lot that the Olympics are this summer (August, after SRP) and we feel this summer will be one filled with high energy.

Adults, watch for an outstanding Summer Reading Program for all of you this year!

Back to Spring Break Fun Day.

The kids colored various sport themed balls to hang from the ceiling.  Every year we have a different theme to have hanging from the ceiling.  The kids had a fun time putting their signature style into the art work.  They also made and signed a football player that will be placed on a football field of reading this upcoming summer.  They also made a sports themed mobile to hang up in their home.

All those oatmeal containers we were asking for?  They made a ping pong basketball type game for the kids to bring home that ended up being a HUGE hit.  Those ping pongs were a huge success!

Games were played as well.  Have you ever watched a group full of kids roll an egg with their nose?  That was a hilarious game to watch! And no one got carpet burn on their nose.  We consider that a total success!

Another game the kids played was carrying an egg on a spoon around a bucket and back to their team.

The teams were evenly matched and each won one of the games.

We read the Manning book Family Huddle

We ended the Spring Break Fun Day with pizza bought by the Friends of the Library.  It was a packed full day but one that was a whole lot of fun as well.

We are looking forward to Summer when we can say Ready, Set, READ! with this group of kids.  Hopefully the weather will actually be like summer weather should and not like this snowy weather we are getting in Spring.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this Spring Break Fun Day a success and thank you to all who donated their time and empty containers.  You all helped make this day extra fun for a lot of kids!

Spring Break Fun Day

Book Sale

Every spring break, the library holds their annual books sale (put on by the Friends of the Library) on the same day they hold their Spring Break Fun Day.

Picking names for summer groups

Picking names for summer groups

The theme for the summer reading program this year is Dream Big, Read! and it features the artistry of Brian Lies, which emphasizes night time. This year the kids will be divided into teams named after nighttime animals.  They all had a chance to vote for their favorite team names.

Craft Time!

Craft time!

For the first craft, the kids worked on coloring a moon and a star.  There were sequins to embellish them with.  These moons and stars will hang from the library ceiling throughout the summer.

Crafting is fun!

Crafting is fun!

Craft time is always fun, and always a little messy.  We were so thankful for all the parents who stayed to help with the kids!

Snack time

Cookies for snack time

All the thinking, crafting and game time made the kids hungry so we took a break for some cookies.  There was silence in the library in the moment of munching on cookies.

Making necklaces

Making necklaces

For a take home craft, the kids worked hard on making themselves a necklace to wear.  There were beads and charms to choose from and they had fun stringing the necklaces together.

Chalk Talk Time

With their new necklaces on, the kids settled in to hear Miss Mandy read Miss Brooks Loves Books (And I Don’t).  Miss Mandy read the story while Miss Nan did her mesmerizing chalk talk drawing.

It always amazes the kids to see how Miss Nan starts her drawings and draws a scene from the book as someone reads.

The finished project was a fun drawing indeed!!

The library is rather fond of Miss Nan’s chalk talk drawings and we keep them up and around as much as possible.  The last one Miss Nan finished was about the Lorax, and even with the new drawing the kids like to check out her older drawings as well.

After the chalk talk, lunch was delivered!

Thanks so much for lunch, Subway!

Thanks so much for lunch, Subway!

The Friends of the Library provided the money to pay for a lunch for all the spring break kids.  Subway in Martin, wonderful Subway!, cut us a special deal so they could feed us all on such a small budget.  We are huge fans of Subway and if you happen to stop in there (which you should), PLEASE tell them thank you!

yummy food!

You should have seen all the kids eyes when they seen the HUGE sandwich! It was truly funny!

When they had all had their fill of the yummy food, there wasn’t much left.  The kids so enjoyed eating a “big” lunch.

The kids spent the rest of the afternoon finishing their moons and stars.  They also made their own bookmarks.  One side told what the upcoming special events of the summer were and the other side was whatever they cared to draw on them.  The bookmarks were then laminated to keep for an extra long time.

Spring Break Fun Day is a great way to get the kids into the library and looking forward to a fun summer of reading.

As a library, we want the kids to feel welcome  here.  This is their library too, and the love of a library at a young age leads to lifetime of learning.

One of the fun things the kids really love doing is playing games in the library.  It just seems more fun if you get to be loud and laugh in a library!

Thanks to Sahrie for the fun game time games!

Thanks to Sahrie for the fun game time games!

Sahrie came up with a bunch of games to keep the kids hopping.  Between every craft there was a game and not once did all the kids (with varied ages of 5 to 12) find the games lame.  That, people, is a true library miracle.
